The Compass Within: Aquila 1’s Journey of Self-Discovery

There are no maps for the transition to adulthood. Instead, it is in this very season we begin to forge our own compasses. How we respond to challenges and opportunities shapes who we become and the lens through which we view the world.

During the Compass Programme, students of Aquila 1 embarked on a journey of self-discovery grounded in authenticity. Working in close partnership with the dedicated teachers of Admiralty Secondary School (ADSS), the team at Sowers Ark had the privilege of walking alongside them over 8 weeks as they built meaningful connections and charted the path ahead.

Here are three defining lessons Aquila 1 took away from the experience:

1. The Power of “We” over “I”
A classroom is merely a space until the people within it become a community. Aquila 1 learned that true friendship goes beyond shared activities; it is the conscious decision to extend acceptance and take ownership of each other’s growth. This creates a safe space where students rarely feel the need to hide their uncertainties while working toward their aspirations.

We over I
We over I

“Deep down I know I’m unique in some way… Now I wonder if there are things I still don’t know about myself.” – Aquila 1 Student

2. Lifting Others
Leadership is best cultivated in the moments you show up for others. Stepping out of their comfort zones, Aquila 1 found purpose and joy in showing kindness to their local community and expressing gratitude to the teachers, staff and vendors of ADSS who support and enrich their lives daily. By lifting others, they recognized the crucial role they play as peers in guarding and elevating each other’s self-worth.

“I got to write my classmates’ best values just for them to know what they’re good at, even if they don’t think so.”  – Aquila 1 Student

3. Teachers as Enablers
The deep, meaningful learning was only possible because of the fertile ground already cultivated by the teachers who invest in them daily. More than educators, they are enablers who provide a foundation of trust and safety. Throughout the programme, their teachers were right there alongside them, bearing witness to both the struggles and quiet breakthroughs.

“There were many proud moments during the programme; when the students shared their personal feelings and experiences, and how grateful they were for what they have achieved or are going to achieve in the future.” – Mdm Tay Kai Yun Karen, Lead Teacher

A Call to Action
Aquila 1’s lessons resonate far beyond the classroom walls; serving as a timely reminder to us as parents, educators and facilitators. Moments of connection are there to be seized. Let our words and actions encourage the next generation to dream rather than hold back, to grow instead of stagnate, and to unearth the unique value each of them brings to a world that needs exactly what they have to offer.
